Chapter 6 - A Lonesome Battle

After finding out about a problem arising at work, the days continued on as there was nothing for me to do about it. Volker-san insisted on resolving it by himself without anyone coming near him... 

Volker: Why did you do something so pointless!? Didn't I tell you not to do something unnecessary!? You're in the way, leave! I've said this many times now, I can do this on my own. Just leave me alone!

Volker-san's angry sounding voice was heard from inside the room. Hoping that it'll calm him down a little, I entered the room with some warm tea that I brewed in my hands. 

(But...) 

MC: Volker-san, I made some tea. How about you take a break? 

Volker: ... 

Volker-san, who was glaring at the documents, gave me that same look. Just as I twitched at that moment, he turned away soon after. 

Volker: You didn't have to do that. I can get a maid to do it. 

MC: ...I'm sorry for doing something unnecessary. Since I've already gone through the trouble to do so... I'll leave it here. 

Volker: ... 

Just as Volker-san was about to say something, he didn't say a word and picked up some new documents with a stern expression... 

Chapter 7 - With Your Support

As Volker-san was being stubborn into resolving the problem at work, I heard from the other subordinates that this difficult predicament was Eric-san's fault. 

(I want to help him, but...) 

Right now, Volker-san has shut himself in his room with all the work that he brought over there. 

I visited Volker-san's room with some tea on hand today as well, but... 

MC: If you can, please take a break and drink some of this tea. 

Volker: ...I can't right now. Really, don't worry about me. Having you do that sort of thing makes me worried that it's making my heart hurt. 

MC: ...If you're that worried about it, then please rest a little. I'm getting... worried about you. 

Volker-san moved his gaze away from the documents and was looking at me. I saw that there were bags underneath his eyes due to exhaustion. 

Volker: ... 

(I wonder if I'm being intrusive...) 

Although, Volker-san slowly picked up the cup... 

Volker: ...It smells nice. 

MC: Yes, I heard that this was your favorite tea... 

Volker: I'll have some. Won't you join me? 

MC: Yes, of course. 

(Thank goodness...!) 

Feeling happy that he wasn't pushing me away, I broke into a smile. After Volker-san pressed his fingers against his tired eyes, he drank the tea with a reassured expression.

Since then, as Volker-san was continuing his work wholeheartedly, I would come see him, so that he can take a break for a bit. 

Then, a few days later... 

Volker: ...That's all of them. 

Volker-san murmured that as he placed all the documents on the desk. 

MC: Have you finished? 

Volker: Yeah, now there won't be any more problems. 

With a tranced expression, Volker-san broke into a smile. 

Volker: I'm going to... take a little break. 

MC: Okay, that's good. Please do. Then, I'll... 

Volker: No, you stay here. I feel at ease with you around. 

When Volker-san walked over to the sofa, he gestured me to come over. Just as his gentle tone and action made my heart skip a beat, I walked over to the sofa as well. Then... 

Volker: ...I'm getting really sleepy now that I'm feeling at ease. 

MC: ... 

Volker-san placed his head on top of my lap and closed his eyes in comfort. The faint scent of ink that was emitting and Volkr-san's scent made my heart race. 

Volker: I want to... thank you. 

MC: Thank me... 

Volker: You were looking after me. I won't be satisfied unless I thank you. 

As he looked both clearly tired and sleepy right now... 

MC: ...Then... I would like to take Ruby on a walk like you mentioned before. 

When I caressed his soft hair, Volker-san closed his eyes in comfort. 

Volker: Taking Ruby on a walk. That sounds nice... We'll do that... 

As Volker-san smiled in relief, he fell into a peaceful slumber. 

MC: ...Good work. 

When I said that softly, so that I wouldn't wake him up, I gently removed his glasses...

......

Then, after a while... Just as I looked up from hearing the sound of the door in the room, I saw the subordinates showing themselves inside the room with worried looks. 

Young Official 1: Ah, o-our apologies. We couldn't help, but worry... 

MC: Then, please be quiet, so that you don't wake him up... 

When they each quietly entered the room, they looked at Volker-san's sleeping face with smiles. As his sleeping faec made him look somewhat childish, it made the working Volker-san look like a different person. 

Eric: ... 

Among the people, Eric-san was looking at Volker-san sadly. 

Eric: I really... have nothing to say. 

MC: Eric-san. Volker-san didn't blame anyone... and said that he would take responsibility for everything as the boss. 

Eric: ...

After Eric-san looked at Volker-san as he was sleeping innocently for a while... 

Eric: ...There was only a difference between our abilities.

After saying that, he made the same tranced expression that Volker-san made...

Last Chapter - The Bond That's Connected by Ruby

A few days later... 

Just like what Volker-san promised, we took Ruby out for a walk in the courtyard. Among the various colorful flowers that were blooming beautifully, their sweet scent would be carried by the wind sometimes. 

Volker: I would always walk him at the place where I stretch out my legs a little. 

MC: Really? Even though there's such a nice courtyard here... 

Volker: ...There are too many people in the castle, so that wouldn't be good. 

MC: Why? 

Volker: That's because... 

Official 1: Prince Volker!

Just as Volker-san was about to say something, someone called out to him right at that moment. 

Official 2: Your Highness, that rabbit... 

Official 1: Ah, could it be Prince Volker's rabbit!? 

The two people that spoke out widened their eyes when they saw Ruby. 

Volker: ...

Volker-san covered his face with his hand troubledly. 

MC: Um, we're taking a walk together. 

Official 2: Heh, that's a cute rabbit. But, to think that Prince Volker has a rabbit... Somehow, it makes you feel the affinity between the two. 

Volker: Eh...? 

Just as Volker-san became surprised, the two subordinates continued talking happily. 

Official 1: Look, seems like it was true. 

Official 2: Ah! The old rumor about someone walking in the hallway while carrying a rabbit... 

Official 1: A ghost... There was a rumor about it being a vengeful spirit of a prince... 

Official 2: So, that's what it really was!

(T-There was a rumor like that...) 

When I looked at Volker-san, he seemed to be taken aback from their conversation.

After parting from those two, we walked around the vast courtyard with Ruby for a while. Then... 

Volker: ...When I thought about it clearly, I probably have built a wall around myself. 

Suddenly, Volker-san chuckled as he made a wry smile. 

MC: Volker-san... 

Volker: It's just as you said, there's no need for me to get all worked up. There was no need for a perfect human. Hiding by lying to myself... I didn't need to do that. 

When Volker-san broke into a smile, it shined brightly in the sun. 

MC: Yes! That's what I think. Your various faces are a part of your wonderful self, Volker-san. 

Volker: ...Thank you. 

When I saw Volker-san turning red while smiling from the side of his face, a warm feeling was filling me up. 

Volker: MC, you really do understand me. 

The moment he said that... 

MC: ...

He lightly held my hand and gripped it tightly. Just as my heart skipped a beat, I looked up at Volker-san as he was looking at me seriously. Compared to the bright sun, those eyes were shining exceptionally... 

Volker: I feel like I can do somewhat better from here on as a worker. This time... I'm going to increase my private time. Not just for Ruby.... 

Volker-san's blushing cheeks turned into a dark shade of pink again. 

Volker: I want to spend time with you. Won't you go out with me? 

Volker-san was nervous as he said that firmly. Although, his firm, yet slightly stiff tone... felt pleasantly affectionate. 

MC: Yes, of course. 

(Me too... I still want to know more about Volker-san from here on.) 

When I strongly thought of that, I gripped his hand that was holding mine. 

Volker: Next time, I'm going to try taking a walk in the courtyard with my coworkers. That way, even people that are committed to their work will get better too. 

After Volker-san said that as he was being talkative, I became more attracted to him...
