Chapter 5 - An Orphan

Guild Member 4: You're the one who's usually stingy with money! Doesn't that make it clear that you're the culprit!? 

Dayang: What's with you guys!? I don't know anything!

-Flashback-

Dayang-kun's sorrowful shouts from that time remained in my ears... Since the money and medicine were stolen, they imprisoned me along with him. 

Dayang: Dammit... Why? What's wrong with liking money? 

Dayang-kun said that as he was hugging his knees. I silently sat down next to him. 

MC: ...Are you that fixated on money? 

Dayang: Of course I am! Money means everything in the world after all!

After saying that somewhat roughly, Dayang-kun bit his lip tightly. 

MC: Dayang-kun...

Dayang: Sorry. I didn't mean to shout at you, but... In the past, during the war with some peddlers that my parents were involved with, they lost their lives. Since then, I've been an orphan without a home nor land. 

MC: Something so sad happening... 

Dayang: I wasn't particularly an unfortunate person or anything. It's just that... The only thing that mattered during that time was money. Money was the only thing that seemed to have value. 

As he looked like he was hiding the sadness within his heart... Before I knew it, I gently stroked Dayang-kun's back as he curled himself up.

I thought that he was going to push my hand away, but Dayang-kun didn't say anything and just looked down. At that moment... 

Guild Member 1: Dayang... 

We heard a hushed voice from the entrance. 

Dayang: ...You...

Over there was a single man signaling that he had the key to open the door... 

Last Chapter - Something That Money Can't Buy

Coming to save us from imprisonment was the man that informed Dayang-kun about the critical situation in the first place. 

Guild Member 1: Sorry that something like this had happened... 

Dayang: It's okay, you didn't do anything wrong. 

Dayang-kun patted the man's shoulder. 

Guild Member 1: Dayang... 

Dayang: ...Well, now that you've done something bad, lend me your help. 

Dayang-kun grinned as if he was scheming something...

While we were in front of the main warehouse in the center of the guild, Dayang-kun and I hushed our breathing. 

Dayang: Like I said, you don't need to help me. Now's your chance to pull away. 

MC: But... I'm already involved enough. 

When I said that with a smile, Dayang-kun scratched his head troubledly. 

Dayang: Haa~... You sure are good-natured. The kind of person I'm not too good with I'll tell you this though, you won't be getting a reward out of this. 

MC: Yes, I don't need one. 

When I said that clearly, I watched the main warehouse closely. 

Dayang: Not wanting any money... You're seriously... strange. 

Those single words that Dayang-kun softly murmured slipped through my ears...

Guild Member 1: Ah, someone is here...!

Suddenly, I became tense with nervousness. 

(Huh? ...He's wearing the same robe as Dayang-kun...) 

After that person checked his surroundings, he approached the main warehouse. 

Dayang: What the hell? He's wearing my robe... 

Guild Member 1: Could that be the culprit... 

The person that was disguised as Dayang-kun looked like he was about to disappear within the darkness as he moved... The moment he placed his hand on the doorknob... 

Dayang: What the hell do you think you're doing!? 

Dayang-kun, who was watching, suddenly jumped at the person. 

MC: Dayang-kun, look out...!!

As my efforts to stop him were in vain, Dayang-kun landed on the person before I knew it. 

??: Uwaah!!? 

When the robed person fell to the floor at that moment, Dayang-kun held him down. 

Dayang: You've got some nerve to imitate my looks! Show your face!

Guild Member 1: Surrender yourself. 

After the two of them held down the person that was struggling, Dayang-kun placed his hand on the hood and... 

Dayang: You...!

Guild Member 2: I just... I just wanted money!! It must be nice for you, Dayang! You can use your position as leader to fill your own pockets as much as you want!!

Guild Member 1: Dayang would never do that...!!

Dayang: ...!!

Becoming agitated, Dayang-kun rasied his fist. 

MC: Dayang-kun! Don't!!

Just as I shouted that, Dayang-kun stopped his movements instantly. When Dayang-kun looked towards him, he looked like he was crying. 

Dayang: I don't have a reason to stop. 

I felt pain when he said that softly, but... 

MC: If you do hit him... You'll surely feel more pain.

Dayang: ...You truly are good-natured. 

Dayang-kun lowered his fist. 

Dayang: I'll leave him to you. 

Guild Member 1: Y-Yes...!

Dayang-kun left from there quickly. 

Guild Member 1: ...Dayang-kun gives himself the minimum wage and would never obtain money that way. He would use his usual earnings to reward our friends in the guild and set some aside for developing medicine. It's quite easy to misunderstand him because of how he usually is... 

MC: ...

Dayang: Listen. The world is all about money. It's all about money, MONEY! I've been told that human love is the most important thing, but that doesn't do it for me.

(Even though he says something like that, he really thinks of his friends more than anyone...) 

Then, the accusations against him were cleared up, but... Thinking about how Dayang-kun felt about being betrayed by his comrade has made me feel pain for a long time...

Once the robbery incident had settled down, Dayang-kun and I left the kingdom. Dayang-kun was the same as usual as he was lightly wandering around the kingdoms to peddle. 

Dayang: Ah, but that sure was a disaster. 

As he said that carefreely, Dayang-kun looked up at the sky. 

MC: It sure was troubling... Are you okay now? 

Dayang: Hm? About what? 

MC: Well, uh... About your comrade pinning the crime onto you. 

Dayang: Ah, that. 

As a response to what I said incomprehensibly, Dayang-kun responded cheerfully. 

Dayang: Let's just say... It's not worth worrying about. 

MC: Eh...? 

Dayang: I don't like the fact that the crime was pinned onto me, but losing all the money would be worse. Still, well, I somehow understood that all the money in the world isn't everything. 

MC: Is... that so? 

Dayang: Yeah. The guy, who saved us by letting us free. You too, you said that you wanted to help me without any kind of reward... Also, you stopped me from hitting that guy. If I had done that... I would've been in more pain. So, I don't feel bad about that sort of bad thing happening or anything. 

MC: Dayang-kun... 

I felt warmth spreading within my heart. His grin looked more carefree and gentler than ever. 

Dayang: Fuwaah~, I'm sleepy. I've been so busy since that incident. I haven't gotten the time to sleep. Let me rest for a bit.  

MC: Eh? 

Dayang: Isn't it fine? Here, come here. 

MC: ...!

Dayang-kun pulled my hand. 

Dayang: Ah, so calming. 

As we were sitting together, the warm sunlight shined on us. When Dayang-un placed his head on my shoulder, he narrowed his eyes happily. I became drawn to those bright eyes. 

(Even though he's forceful and thinks about nothing, but money, he's a kind and... strange person.) 

Dayang: Hey, there really was something that can't be converted to money. 

MC: Eh... 

Dayang: For example, something like this bond with you. 

MC: !

Those unbelievable words made my cheeks turn red. 

Dayang: What's wrong? 

MC: N-Nothing... 

(What... does he mean?) 

Dayang: Let's stay like this for a bit longer. You okay with that, MC? 

MC: ...Sure. 

I tried to question the meaning behind Dayang-kun's words, but... 

Dayang: ...

He started sleeping peacefully soon after. Right now... With the warmth that I was feeling on my shoulder, all that I found was an irreplaceable happy moment...
