Chapter 4 - Putting in the Effort

Just as one of the men pushed Kaine-kun aside and was about to grab my arm... 

Kaine: MC-san...!

Well Built Man: Uwoh!? 

Kaine-kun sent the man flying strongly... 

MC: K-Kaine-kun!? 

Suddenly, he picked me up lightly. 

Kaine: MC-san! Hang on tight!!

After saying that, he immediately ran off while carrying me. 

Well Built Man: You little! Come back here!!

The men chased us, but Kaine-kun's feet were fast that we got further away from them instantly. 

(W-Wow...!) 

Kaine-kun held my shoulder tightly. I felt the warmth of his slim, yet strong hands through my clothes. That warmth made me feel reassured... 

Last Chapter - As a Single Man

While carrying me, Kaine-kun ran through town. Then, after checking that we've lost sight of the men completely, he finally stopped his feet. 

Kaine: Haa... Haa... MC-san, are you okay? 

Out of breath, he looked at me worriedly. 

MC: Y-Yes. Thank you, Kaine-kun. 

His hand that was holding my shoulder was really warm and was making my heart race somehow. 

Kaine: Ah! Sorry!

Finally realizing it, he placed me down on the ground in a panic. 

Kaine: Sorry... For picking up a girl like that. 

MC: It's okay! Thank you. But, wasn't I heavy? 

Kaine: Not at all!

Then, Kaine-kun rolled up his sleeve and flexed his arm. 

Kaine: You're light and also, I'm really strong! I've been training after all!

Kaine-kun narrowed his eyes proudly. 

Kaine: To be honest, I didn't really want to run away... It would've hurt if I hit them, right...? So. 

(Kaine-kun... He's so kind.) 

MC: Yes. Even I would want you to hold back. 

Kaine: MC-san... But, I'm really strong!

Kaine-kun gripped his arm. Although, he didn't flex it... 

Kaine: I-I don't really have any muscles!! And I may not be tall...  But, I'm the real deal!

With his face all red, he told me that desperately. Seeing him like that was so cute that I broke into a smile. 

Kaine: ... 

Kaine-kun puffed out his cheeks that instant. 

Kaine: You're so mean~

MC: I-I'm sorry. 

Kaine: But, do you understand? I'm going to protect you!

MC: Yes, thank you, Kaine-kun. 

Kaine: ...

When he smiled, there was suddenly a serious look in his eyes as he narrowed them. 

Kaine: I'm not a little brother. 

His soft voice made me look at him in surprise. 

Kaine: I... I'm a man after all. 

As he was looking at me, my heart skipped a beat. 

MC: Kaine-kun... 

(Kaine-kun isn't a little brother. He's a man.) 

Kaine: ......

When our gazes met, his eyes softened up. 

Kaine: Shall we go back to the shops? 

MC: Eh...? 

Kaine: We were interrupted earlier. Okay? 

He placed his hand over mine perplexedly. 

MC: ...!

Kaine: Shall we go? 

When he showed a bright smile, his strong hand pulled mine. As my heart was racing differently than before, we left the alley and returned to town...
