Chapter 6 - Expectations Rising

The next day... The warm sunlight filled the silent room. 

MC: Ciel-kun, how long is he going to take... 

While Ciel-kun was meeting with the king, I stayed in the audience's waiting room until they were done talking. 

(Just what are they talking about?) 

After looking at the guard that was standing straight near the door many times... 

Ciel: Sorry to keep you waiting. 

Silently opening the sliding door, Ciel-kun walked over here. 

MC: Ciel-kun! What were you talking about with His Majesty?

Ciel: Isn't it obvious? Preparations for a rattrap. 

(Eh...?) 

With a grin, Ciel-kun didn't say anything else and held out his hand to me. When I held that hand and got up from the chair, he started walking somewhat happily. 

Then, until the day of the exhibition... I went around town with Ciel-kun. I thought about how I wanted to help with what Ciel-kun was going to do at the amazing exhibition... 

Chapter 7 - A Desire for Victory

Then, the opening day of the exhibition has arrived... I was in the middle of the joyous hustle and bustle. 

MC: So many people...!

Ciel-kun's display was like an amusement park. There were small houses and a playground made out of various candies on it. 

Child 1: Wow! I just want to eat them all!

Child 2: What's this? This rotating horse! Awesome!

A konpeito fountain and a small merry go round made of sugar candy... While the children were playing around in a daze, the adults were watching them happily. 

MC: Looks like it's a huge success. 

Ciel: Since it's a display by a patronage of His Majesty, lots of merchants pitched in when I mentioned his name. It's the perfect opportunity for the merchants to improve their image. As expected, everyone offered to help. 

Everything going according to his plan made me sigh in admiration. 

Ciel: You must've gone through a lot of trouble too. 

As the number of people was increasing, Ciel-kun watched calmly. 

(I really wonder what kind of life Ciel-kun has been living.) 

While children of various ages were playing with smiles, one person was watching the scene coldly and it made an unsettling feeling rise for some reason. 

Ciel: ...You finally came. 

When Ciel-kun raised his face, a single man was standing there with a dark look among the crowd that was overflowing with smiles. 

(That man, with the flower arrangement...!) 

Man: ...Just what did you do? No one is coming over to my side. 

Ciel: It's simple. I offered something that'll stimulate their desires more than your flower arrangement. 

Man: What...? 

Ciel: Children are surprisingly more honest with what they want. Children can't help, but be fascinated and won't calm down about it. Also, adults were bringing them here. 

He looked at the adults that were happy about the children that were playing around. 

Ciel: That's right, also... I looked into the flowers that you were using. It seems like it's some kind of carnivorous plant that emits a mist that causes hallucinations. Also, what triggers it is a specific loud sound... 

Man: ...!

Ahead of Ciel-kun's gaze were the ringing bells near the man's waist. 

Ciel: It doesn't have an entry in the books yet, so I would say that it's a newly discovered plant. It might be possible for it to pass through inspection. 

(Wow... To think that he investigated that much.) 

As the man was silent, he glared at Ciel-kun.

Ciel: For the most part, you were using the exhibition to test out the effects, so that you can come up with a moneymaking scheme, right? 

Man: Impossible... How do you know so much...!

When the man asked that shakily, Ciel-kun chuckled deeply. 

Ciel: A demon told me. 

Man: Don't screw with me...!

At that moment, the man was about to hit Ciel-kun. 

??: That's enough. 

Just as we turned towards that overly majestic voice, the king was standing there. 

King: You have my thanks. Earl Phantomhive, Traumerei Princess. 

The guards seized the man as the people around watched the scene with great interest. 

King: I heard what you said, who would've thought... Looks like it was true. I mustn't let someone who'd bring harm to the people roam freely. 

By the king's signal, a guard started to retrieve the flower arrangement. 

Man: Dammit... Let me go!

Ciel-kun silently approached the man that was struggling. 

Ciel: It's my victory. 

Man: ...!

After Ciel-kun said that, the man became completely silent and was taken away by the guards. 

(Ciel-kun...) 

Just as I was about to call out to him at that moment... 

??: Mister... 

When I turned around, I saw those siblings coming over here.

(That's right... Those children were looking forward to that flower arrangement.) 

Ciel: ... 

Children: Hey! You guys should hurry and come! Let's play with the pond made of neri ame*!

Other children pulled the siblings' hands with them. For a while, we heard the two of them laughing happily... 

MC: They're smiling... 

Ciel: Hmph. Such self-interested kids. Let's leave. 

Ciel-kun slowly turned his back on them and started walking. His footsteps sounded noble, yet slightly lonely...

Last Chapter - Wishing for a Smile

When I followed Ciel-kun from behind as he was walking fast, I reached his side. 

MC: Ciel-kun, that was amazing. 

Ciel: It's no big deal, I was just killing some time. 

Then... 

Ciel: ...That guy can really do it, even in another world. 

He murmured that somewhat frustrated. 

MC: That guy?

(By that guy... I wanted to ask him many times, but who is he talking about?)

CIel: ... 

When he laughed while no one was around, Ciel-kun's shoulders dropped. 

Ciel: Did you know? Demons hate being bored. 

MC: Eh...? 

Unable to understand what he meant, I stood still as I tilted my head to the side. Although, Ciel-kun frowned a little and didn't say anything else as he continued walking. 

MC: Wait! ...Ciel-kun. 

When I called out to stop him, Ciel-kun slowed down a little. 

Ciel: What? 

MC: ...There's something I want to ask. 

What went through my thoughts were the siblings' smiles and in contrast to that was Ciel-kun's cold gaze... 

MC: Ciel-kun, you didn't just notice something about the flower arrangement and stopped it for nothing... Weren't you thinking about those siblings? Because they looked so sad... So, didn't you make that display because you wanted to make them smile? 

When I asked that pleadingly... 

Ciel: ... 

When Ciel-kun stopped with his back facing me, he lightly sighed. 

Ciel: Me? For what reason? I was just playing a game out of boredom. 

That back was firm and unwavering. 

(To summarize it, that wasn't the reason why Ciel-kun did that...) 

MC: The two of them are playing with their friends and are smiling happily. You understand how those children feel... That's why I think you did it. 

Chuckling deeply, Ciel-kun turned towards me. 

Ciel: I don't understand what they're feeling. Because I don't think about other people or anyone else. 

MC: But... 

Ciel: Don't say anymore. I just did it because I wanted to win the game. In a sense, my display was no different than that flower arrangement. 

MC: ...I don't think so. 

Ciel: ... 

MC: That flower arrangement was really beautiful. 

Ciel: Huh...? 

Ciel-kun's eye widened greatly. 

MC: Even if it didn't have such an effect, I think it would've made people smile like you, Ciel-kun. 

After I said that, Ciel-kun stayed silent for a while...
