Caliburn - Prince of Avalon - Main Story

Chapter 1 - Avalon's Cavalry

Kingdom of Weapons, Avalon, September...

In the town of Avalon that's surrounded by strong castle walls, it was filled with lots of shops that had weapons and armor on display. A lot of people that were walking down the road were carrying swords by their side too.

(As expected of the Kingdom of Weapons...)

As I was looking at the town that was overflowing with vigor, I headed towards the castle to meet with Prince Caliburn, who had invited me. After continuing on for a while, the moment I looked at the distant castle...

Townsman 1: It's the cavalry of Avalon's royal family...!

As Avalon's cavalry stepped across by horse, they walked into town in an assembled formation.

Townsman 2: They always have a gallant appeal whenever I see them.

Townswoman 1: Such manly looks... They're so fascinating to watch.

When the townspeople stopped walking, they looked at the noble cavalry and spoke in admiration.

(Like what everyone is saying, they're really cool...)

As I was silently captivated by the march of the cavalry, they approached me...

(Huh...?)

The person that's leading the troop in front got off from the horse and respectively bowed. Looking good in the beautiful formal military uniform, it was the person who invited me, Prince Caliburn.

Caliburn: I've come to get you... Princess MC.

MC: Caliburn-san...!

Caliburn: My apologies for being late. Princess, your hand.

My heart became noisy from his actions that made him look like a knight from a fairy tale. As my heart was pounding, I held his hand that was presented to me.

Caliburn: Pardon me.

Caliburn-san pulled me up with his strong arm and pulled me up to the top of the horse.

Caliburn: Now then, let's head to the castle.

The people on the roadside cheered and waved at us as we headed to the castle. I became embarrassed from how masculine Caliburn-san looked...

Chapter 2 - Gallant Movements

When the prince of Avalon, Caliburn-san, came to pick me up in town, he brought along the cavalry. After a while, once we arrived at the castle gate, Caliburn-san descended from the horse first.

Caliburn: Here, Princess.

Just like when he was riding, he held his hand out to me.

Caliburn: Were you scared? You looked like you were feeling a little nervous.

As he looked at me from aside below, he gave me a worried look.

- I'm fine (☽)

MC: I'm fine.

Caliburn: ...Really? Then, okay, but... I don't want to be improper and disappoint you, the patron.

When he told me that with a sincere look, my heart became noisy again.

- Worry about everyone's gazes (☼)

MC: It was a little embarrassing when the townspeople were looking at us.

Caliburn: Is that so...

When Caliburn-san made a surprised look, he broke into a gentle smile.

Caliburn: This is the first time I've met a princess like you.

While my cheeks were warm, I looked at Caliburn-san's horse.

MC: ...It's such a big horse. Also, it's black eyes are really pretty.

Caliburn: He seems to be happy from you praising him.

Caliburn-san looked at the horse gently as he petted it's jet-black mane.

Caliburn: We should enter the castle soon.

MC: Okay.

When Caliburn-san moved forward, we passed through the grand looking castle gate.

Just as the audience with the king began, the prime minister and leaders were all assembled in a row. Each of the people had an overwhelming appeal as they showed their physique that they received from training.

King: You finally arrived, Traumerei Princess. You have my gratitude for saving my son, Caliburn.

MC: It was nothing... Thank you for inviting me.

King: There are a lot of dangerous monsters that exist in my kingdom. But, the troops in this castle and in town will protect you, so don't worry about it.

Caliburn: Yes. Next time... I won't lose against the dream eaters.

With a straightforward look in his eyes, Caliburn-san nodded towards me. Just as I looked at his gallant and sincere eyes as if I was drawn towards them...

Caliburm: Princess MC, is there something on my face?

MC: No...! It's nothing.

Caliburn: Really? Then, let me take you to your room, right this way.

With elegant movements, Caliburn-san urged me to go.

(Each and every one of his actions are really gallant that it's kind of making me nervous...)

The moment I followed Caliburn-san as the audience continued, I heard the servants' whispered conversation.

Maid: Those two look good together.

Servant: Yeah. Soon, even Caliburn-sama will...

(Eh...)

Due to looking at Caliburn-san's stern behavior and hearing that conversation... I became aware of his charm that it made my heartbeat fast again...

Chapter 3 - The Prince's True Nature

After having an audience with the king, Caliburn-san led me to the room that I'll be staying in.

(To have the prince himself leading me... Even earlier too... He came all the way to town to pick me up.)

As I was walking behind him in the majestic hallway, I felt completely ashamed of myself. Then, Caliburn-san suddenly stopped.

Caliburn: ...Strict as expected.

MC: Eh...?

When Caliburn-san loosened his neck a little and turned around, he made a wry smile as he shrugged his shoulders.

Caliburn: When I'm in front of Father, I act all formal... Did my actions worry you?

MC: ! Worry me, that's...

When he showed his true feelings, I frantically shook my head and... Caliburn-san showed an affectionate smile.

Caliburn: You don't need to be stubborn, I must've made you worried.

- You were princelike (☼)

MC: You were really princelike.

Caliburn: Does that mean you were happy?

- You were like a knight (☽)

MC: You were like a knight from a fairytale.

Caliburn: A fairytale?

MC: Yes, I thought that you were cool.

Caliburn: ...I see. In that case, I'm glad that I resembled that until the end.

When his deeply sincere expression that he's been showing up till now broke down, he looked at me with a mischievous smile.

(The Caliburn-san from earlier was cool, but...)

Caliburn-san's slightly crumbled down behavior reassured my nervousness.

(Seeing him smile like this makes me happy.)

Caliburn: Princess MC, this is the room that you'll be staying in. I hope that you'll like it.

When Caliburn-san opened the door himself, he invited me into the room.

Along with the castle's peaceful atmosphere that was sturdy like a fort, the inside of the room had a coziness and some furnishing s that go with it.

Caliburn: We've had it arranged to make you comfortable. If you have any problems, let me know immediately.

MC: Thank you very much.

Caliburn: The castle may have a rustic structure, but please take your time to make yourself at home. Also, if it's all right, I would like to show you around town during tomorrow's inspection.

MC: I'm sorry for making you go through all the trouble into taking care of me. Despite that you're so busy, Caliburn-san.

Caliburn: You don't need to worry about me. I wanted to show you around.

MC: ...Then, I'll be in your care.

Caliburn: Okay, leave it to me. Princess MC, is there anything else that's on your mind?

MC: If you can... I'd rather not be called Princess.

Caliburn: Eh...

When Caliburn-san's eyes widened for a moment, he broke into a pleasant smile.

Caliburn: Haha... You really are strange.

As Caliburn-san chuckled, he looked at me gently.

Caliburn: ...Then, shall I call you, MC?

MC: Sure.

Caliburn: In return, won't you call me, Caliburn?

///Choices///

- Okay (☼)

MC: Okay.

Caliburn: Good. Please try saying it as a test.

- Are you sure? (☽)

MC: Are you sure?

Caliburn: Yes. Of course. Since I'll be calling you, MC.

MC: Then... Caliburn.

When I said his name bashfully...

Caliburn: What is it, MC?

As Caliburn slightly tilted his head to the side, he responded gently. Surrounded by the warm atmosphere, we smiled at each other...

Chapter 4 - Blacksmith Guild

The next morning, it was clear...

Like what Caliburn-san promised, he took me to town.

Caliburn: Since long ago, there weren't a lot of colossal and dangerous monsters appearing in other areas. The kingdom, Avalon, expanded for the sake of subjugating these monsters.

While passing through town, Caliburn explained to me as we walked in front of a blacksmith guild. In the guild, it was overflowing with vigor as customers were having their weapons examined.

Caliburn: Because of that, there are a lot of people that learn the skills in manufacturing weapons and armor and those that have been in that service for a long time.

MC: I see.

Caliburn: Right now, a lot of people from other kingdoms come for weapons and shields. Despite how dangerous it is to encounter a monster.

MC: Is that so...

As I was impressed, I looked at the assembled weapons in front of me. There were a lot of things that I've never seen before, a spear that's taller than me and a big sword.

(They look really heavy... I wonder how everyone uses these. Weapons... Is there one that I can use?)

Just as I thought of that while looking at the assembled weapons...

Caliburn: My apologies.

MC: Eh...?

Caliburn: Bringing a woman to a weapon shop. You're probably not that interested, right...

When Caliburn apologized guiltily, he placed his hand on the back of his neck...

- I'm enjoying myself (☼)

MC: No, I'm enjoying myself.

Caliburn: Really...?

- That's not true (☽)

MC: That's not true.

Caliburn: You don't need to take me into consideration.

///Choices///

MC: It's true. Just now, I was thinking how heavy these weapons looked... and I was wondering if there's a weapon that I can use.

Caliburn: ...Haha.

Caliburn placed his hand on his mouth to refrain himself from laughing.

MC: Caliburn?

Caliburn: You sure say some unexpected stuff.

When he gave me a gentle gaze, my heart softly throbbed.

MC: I-Is that so...?

Caliburn: Yes. During inspections, most of the women that come visit weren't that interested in weapons, but... You're the first one that has thought about using a weapon for themself.

Caliburn was smiling happily, but I became embarrassed and looked down.

MC: C-Caliburn, your sword looks really heavy.

Caliburn: This?

After Caliburn looked at the sword at his waist, he slowly held up the sheath.

Caliburn: You're right... It's really heavy. Even so, this sword is special.

MC: Special?

Caliburn: Yes. I'm a prince that possesses a sword... It's a special sword that's been handed down for generations, but... My older brother* has a shield. I have the strongest sword and Brother has the strongest shield... That's how the two of us protect this kingdom.

T/N: Prytwen. Also, their names are a reference to King Arthur's sword and shield.

As he gripped the handle of the sword, I felt his strong determination.

Caliburn: For that reason, I'm willing to risk my life.

MC: Your life...

Caliburn: Ah, my apologies... It looks like I said too much in front of you.

Caliburn looked at me softly.

(Such a strong and kind person. But...)

Caliburn: MC?

MC: I was thinking how impressive you are... But... If something were to happen to you... I'm sure that would make everyone sad. So...

Caliburn: ...

Caliburn's eyes shook in bewilderment.

Caliburn: You're such a kind person.

When he gave me a very gentle look, I became speechless.

Caliburn: Of course, I won't waste my life. But... That's my duty. Brother is a knight of the castle too. That's how everyone thinks.

MC: ...

His firm words filled me with pain.

Caliburn: My apologies, I take back what I said. It was the words of the sword.

MC: Ah, okay... But, a heavy weapon like that would be pretty hard for a woman to use.

Caliburn: I guess so. It might not be hard for a woman to pull it out from the sheath. But, there are a lot of daring swordswomen. Would you like to see a sword that women use?

MC: Is that all right?

When Caliburn called over the royal family's craftsman, he held out a slim sword that's beautifully decorated to me.

Caliburn: This is a sword that's made for self-defense for a royal princess.

MC: It's really beautiful...

Caliburn: You use it like this...

MC: ...!

When he suddenly grabbed my hand and held me from behind, my heartbeat became fast.

Caliburn: My apologies... I did that subconsciously.

Just as I turned around and looked up at Caliburn, his handsome face was nearby...

MC: ...!

As we were at a breathing distance with our gazes entwined, I couldn't bring myself to speak. At that moment...

Caliburn: ...!

Suddenly, the sound of a heavy bell echoed uneasily throughout the area...

Chapter 5 - Monster Subjugation

While we were at a blacksmith guild, we heard the sound of a heavy bell. At that moment, the people in the area started to become noisy as the tension was spreading.

Caliburn: A monster attack...!?

When Caliburn frowned, he looked towards the castle wall. Aside from earlier, his expression was stiff and I could feel the high tension when he said that deeply.

MC: A monster...

Caliburn: My apologies. Before the colossal monster appears, I need to get in touch with the investigation unit...

When I turned towards Caliburn, he furrowed his brow apologetically.

Caliburn: I ended up bring you to such a dangerous place...

MC: No, it's okay.

Caliburn: ...Anyway, let's return to the castle.

Caliburn pulled my hand.

Caliburn: If anything happens, I'll be sure to protect you. So, don't worry.

As he held my hand, he gripped it more.

(Such a warm hand...)

Caliburn and I hurried to the castle by horse...

When we returned to the castle, the troops were assembled in a rush. Among the armed soldiers, there was a heavy atmosphere hanging over.

??: Caliburn, you've returned.

The noble looking man, who was giving orders, walked towards Caliburn.

Caliburn: Brother.

Caliburn's brother gave me a concerned look. When Caliburn nodded as a response to his brother, he turned towards me.

Caliburn: MC, I'll be going to subjugate the monster. I'll return soon, so won't you wait for me at the castle?

MC: Caliburn...

Caliburn held both of my hands and nodded with certainty.

- I'm worried (☽)

MC: But... I'm worried...

Caliburn: ...

When my voice trembled with worry, Caliburn placed his large hand on my shoulder.

Caliburn: It'll be okay... Trust me.

- Don't speak (☼)

MC: ...

While I wasn't saying anything due to being overwhelmed with worry, Caliburn gently caressed my cheek.

Caliburn: Please don't make that face. I'll only be gone for a while.

///Choices///

Caliburn: Also, I'm used to subjugating monsters. It's normal.

MC: Normal...

(It'll be okay... Like what he said, he's been used to it up till now...)

The heavy atmosphere stirred up my worries.

(I know that, but...)

MC: ...Even though you're used to it, it doesn't change the fact that it's dangerous. So, please... Be careful.

When I said that...

Caliburn: ...

I noticed that Caliburn's eyes trembled a little.

MC: Caliburn?

Caliburn: It's nothing...

Caliburn softly stroked my hair to reassure me.

Caliburn: I understand, I promise. I'll succeed in the subjugation and return safely.

MC: Okay... Be careful.

After smiling gently again, Caliburn gallantly turned over his cloak.

Caliburn: ...I'll be going!

With hopeful feelings, I watched Caliburn off from behind as he and the troops left for the subjugation...
