Sai - Prince of Saphinia - Main Story

Chapter 1 - Launching Fireworks

Kingdom of Jewels, Saphinia, August...

Near the castle, we were looking up at the night sky at a quiet, vast prairie...

Suddenly, a bright-colored light made the night colorful.

(Pretty...)

Sai: ...Do you like it?

Next to me, Sai-san turned towards me with his beautiful blue eyes.

MC: Is this... Could this be for me?

Sai: Yes. This is as thanks for waking me up. Everyone in the castle has discussed on how to welcome you, but... Don't you think that it's a little too flashy?

Sai-san slightly lowered his brow as he asked me that.

MC: I'm really happy...! Thank you so much!

Sai: I see. That's good.

After he said that, he looked at me. As fireworks being launched one after another, they shined on me and Sai-san.

(Pretty...)

While we were forgetting about time by gazing at that beauty...

Boy 1: Ah! Prince Sai!

Some young boys noticed Sai-san and ran up to him.

Sai: You guys are the boys from town. It's night now. You should hurry and return home.

Boy 1: We're sorry! But, we wanted to use some fireworks too!

Boy 2: We've brought some small fireworks!

Boy 1: Let's use them together, Prince Sai!

Boy 2: You too, Miss!

MC: Me too! Are you sure?

Boy 2: Yeah! Prince Sai, hurry, hurry!

Although, Sai-san only made a troubled smile.

(Sai-san...?)

MC: You don't want to use them? I'm sure that the handheld fireworks will be pretty too.

When Sai-san thought about it for a bit...

Sai: They're pretty, but... I'm okay with just looking at them. MC, you can go ahead and have fun with them.

He said that softly.

MC: ...But.

Sai: It's okay, don't worry about me.

MC: ...

Sai: I'll wait here, so you go on ahead. Be careful.

MC: ...Okay.

After Sai-san said that as he pushed my back, I went over to where the boys were. When I turned around, Sai-san was quietly looking at the fireworks that were soaring up into the night sky again...

Chapter 2 - The Kitten and Sai

-Flashback-

Sai: They're pretty, but... I'm okay with just looking at them.

-Flashback-

As I was unable to forget about Sai-san's troubled smile, I couldn't sleep well.

The next day... While Sai-san was out doing his duties, I was taking a walk in an alley near the castle.

(I wonder if I went a little too far.)

Along the road that connects the castle and the town, there was an old cabin built there.

(Huh...?)

The moment I walked by the front of the cabin, I heard the voices of the boys from yesterday.

(Are they playing again?)

When I took a closer look...

MC: ...!

The boys were crowded around a kitten and were washing it's body roughly.

MC: Stop that, the kitten doesn't like that!

When I quickly ran over, the boys looked up at me blankly.

Boy 1: This guy was dirty, so we're cleaning him.

When I looked at the kitten, it was trembling in fear.

Sai: MC? Is something wrong?

Just as I turned towards that voice, Sai-san showed his face from a horse carriage.

MC: Sai-san...!

Since Sai-san was done with his duties, he was in the middle of returning to the castle with a servant.

Sai: You go on ahead. I'll be fine from here.

After letting the servant go back to the castle first, Sai-san came over here.

Sai: ...What are you doing?

Boy 1: This cat was dirty, so we brought him to our hideout!

Boy 2: Which is why we're washing him!

Sai-san looked at the scared kitten for a while. Then, he quietly turned towards the boys.

Sai: You shouldn't. The kitten is injured.

(Ah...)

When I looked at the kitten's leg, there was some kind of bite wound on it. The boys realized that for the first time.

Sai: He's hurt from this injury.

After Sai-san pointed that out to the boys, they looked at the injured kitten's leg.

Boy 1: ...It looks painful.

Sai: Seems like he got bitten by a stray dog... He must've been scared because of all the mayhem. That's probably because you guys were being rough with him at your hideout.

The boys looked at the trembling kitten near Sai-san's feet.

Boy 2: We're sorry.

They lowered their heads towards Sai-san.

Sai: Yeah. But, you should be apologizing to the kitten, not me.

Despite his words, Sai-san's expression was soft.

(Sai-san...)

That kind expression made my heart throb lightly.

MC: A-Anyways, we should treat his injury.

Sai: That's right.

The wet kitten snuggled against Sai-san's leg as it cried out affectionately.

- He's quite attached to you (☽)

MC: It seems like he has gotten attached to you, Sai-san.

Sai: ...I guess so.

Sai-san murmured that as if he was uninterested.

- How cute (☼)

MC: Fufu, how cute.

Sai: ...Yeah.

(Sai-san...?)

When Sai-san nodded, the way he was looking at the kitten seemed cold.

Once we've entered the cabin, we were able to give the kitten some treatment with the stuff that was around. Since the kitten was completely attached to Sai-san, he snuggled against him closely.

MC: Looks like he has calmed down now. He must feel at ease with you.

Sai: Eh?

MC: Look, it doesn't look like he wants to leave your side.

Sai: ...

I petted the affectionate kitten as I said that, but Sai-san wouldn't touch him at all.

MC: Sai-san...?

Sai: ...What should I do about him?

MC: Hmm... I know! Sai-san, can you keep him in the castle!?

Sai: Eh...

Sai-san's eyes blinked.

MC: I-I'm sorry... I said something so selfish.

Sai: It's okay... I can't keep him in the castle. Father, he really hates animals. Since it seems like he was bitten by a dog when he was a child... He has prohibited animals from entering the castle since then.

MC: I-Is that so...

(If that's the case...)

MC: Let's look after him here for a while and in the meantime, how about we go search for someone that'll take care of him?

After Sai-san looked at the kitten for a while...

Sai: Since I can't take him home... Let's do that.

He agreed to my suggestion.

MC: Thank you so much! Isn't that nice~!

I picked up the kitten and gently petted his head.

Sai: ...You are.

MC: Eh...?

Sai: Has anyone told you that you're meddlesome?

MC: W-What do you mean by that...?

Those sudden words made me look at Sai-san...

Sai: S-Sorry...

He quickly turned away.

Sai: ...I think it's nice, that part of you.

My cheeks became warm from those words. The earring on Sai-san's right ear emitted a blue sparkle as it swayed...

Chapter 3 - Him Sleeping

Some time later ever since Sai-san and I saved a kitten... I went to the cabin again to give the kitten some food.

Kitten: Meow.

When I entered, the kitten rubbed his head against my leg.

(How cute...)

As I petted his head, he purred and showed his stomach to me.

(Has he gotten attached to me? That makes me happy.)

Sai: MC.

From the cabin's entrance, Sai-san showed his face. Since then, Sai-san has been caring for the kitten with me as well.

MC: Sai-san! It looks like he has taken a liking to me as well!

Sai: I see.

MC: Sai-san, shall we give him a name?

As I was feeling happy, I suggested that, but...

Sai: ...It'd be best not to. It'll make it hard when we have to give him away.

He responded coldly.

(Come to think of it, all that he's been talking about was looking for an owner. But... He seemed sad somehow.)

Sai-san sat down from aside and began to read.

(Could it be that...)

///Choices///

- Do you dislike cats? (☼)

MC: Sai-san... Could it be that you dislike cats?

Sai: Why?

Sai-san looked at me oddly.

- Do you not like it? (☽)

MC: Do you dislike searching for an owner for the kitten because it's so troubling...?

///Choices///

Sai: That's not it. I don't hate cats and I don't find it troubling.

MC: Really?

Sai: Yeah.

MC: ...That's good.

(But... Then, why doesn't he get involved with the kitten that much?)

When I thought of that, I petted the kitten's head again and at that moment...

BANG!

Along with that sudden loud noise, wood that was leaning against the cabin wall fell towards me from above.

MC: ...!

Without thinking, I got down to shield the kitten and...

Sai: ...

MC: Sai-san!

Sai-san protected us as he hung over us.

MC: Sai-san! Sai-san, are you okay!?

The large wood that hit against Sai-san slid down to the floor.

Sai: I'm okay... Just surprised.

MC: T-Thank you. Let me check your shoulder.

Sai: I'm fine. More importantly...

When I followed Sai-san's gaze... The kitten was completely frightened and was trembling near Sai-san's feet.

MC: That must've scared him.

Sai-san gently petted the kitten's head.

Sai: There, there.

(...What a kind face.)

As he was calming the kitten down with a gentle look, I gazed at him.

Sai: It's okay now.

His soft tone filled my heart with warmth.

(Just as I thought...)

MC: I wonder if this kitten wants to be kept by you.

Sai: Eh?

MC: Because he seems really attached to you... When you were petting the kitten, you were making a really gentle expression.

Sai: ...

Sai-san made a bit of a surprised look from my words, but...

Sai: I told you before, I can't keep him at the castle. Also. I think there's someone that can take care of him better than me.

As he calmly said that, he declared that clearly.

///Choices///

- Is that so... (☼)

MC: Is that so...

Sai: That's right. Though, it would make me happy if the owner was a kind person like you, MC.

- That's not true (☽)

MC: I don't think that's true!

I said that strongly.

Sai: Why did that get you all worked up?

///Choices///

As Sai-san chuckled, he continued petting the kitten's head.

Sai: We need to hurry and find an owner.

When Sai-san said that to the kitten, the way he was looking at him was really gentle... I continued thinking if it was best for the kitten to be with Sai-san...

The next day... While there wasn't a single cloud in the clear sky, I went to the cabin to check on the kitten again.

(...Huh?)

When I entered, Sai-san was there sitting near the wall.

MC: Sai-san...?

Just as I softly called out to him, his eyelids slightly trembled.

(He's napping...)

The kitten was sleeping as he was cuddled up to him. Near the kitten, a plate of milk for him to drink was placed there.

(Sai-san... He must've brought it.)

As the sunlight was shining in from the window, it gently enveloped Sai-san and the kitten.

(Maybe... I should sit next to him.)

I softly sat next to Sai-san as he was sleeping with a soft expression.

Sai: Mm...

(...!)

When Sai-san's head landed on my shoulder, his hair tickled my cheek.

(So warm...)

As I felt his body warmth, I dozed off from that comfort before I knew it...

Chapter 4 - Sai's Feelings

When the wind touched my cheek, I slowly opened my eyes.

(Ah, I...)

It seemed like I fell asleep without realizing it when I sat down next to them as they were sleeping.

Sai: ...Are you awake?

A gentle voice said that.

MC: ...!

Once I came to my senses, my head was on top of Sai-san's lap. My shoulder felt warm as his right hand was placed on it.

MC: I'm sorry! I...

Just as I frantically got up...

Sai: ...You looked so comfortable as you were sleeping.

Sai-san looked at little embarrassed too as he turned his gaze away from me.

Sai: ...

MC: ...

Within the silence, my heart became noise.

Sai: Come to think of it, the kitten isn't here.

Just as Sai-san mentioned that.

MC: Eh...

Sai: When I woke up, he was already gone... I thought that he would return sooner or later, but he still hasn't come back yet.

MC: His injury hasn't healed up yet, so where could he have gone?

Sai: ...Let's go look outside.

MC: Okay.

Sai-san and I searched for the kitten together, but we couldn't find him anywhere.

(Where did he go?)

After going through the forest, we took a step forward into a cavern that was nearby and at that moment...

MC: Sai-san! Over there...!

In the middle of a flowing river in the cavern, the kitten was holding on as it was standing on top of a rock. It seemed like the kitten came here for a drink, but the waves of the river were too fast for him.

MC: How did he get over there... We need to hurry and save him!

Just as I was about to go into the fast river...

Sai: Wait!

Sai-san strongly grabbed my arm.

MC: But, we need to hurry!

Sai: No, it's too dangerous.

///Choices///

- Go as is (☽)

When I turned away from Sai-san, I was about to head into the river.

Sai: I said it's dangerous! You stay here.

- I'll be okay (☼)

MC: I'll be okay! I-

Sai: Just leave it to me and wait here!

///Choices///

After Sai-san lets go of my arm, he went into the river without hesitation. Despite that it was deep and he became soaked up to his waist, it looked like he was about to fall down at any moment from the fast waves.

(Sai-san...!)

When he somehow made it to where the kitten was, he picked him up and came back here.

MC: What a relief...! Thank you so much.

Sai: ...

He looked at me with his blue eyes.

MC: Sai-san... Are you okay?

As he was silent, I asked him that worriedly...

Sai: You're really reckless.

MC: Eh...

Sai-san murmured that troubledly as if he was amazed.

Sai: ...

His blue eyes were breathtakingly beautiful.

MC: S-Same goes for you, Sai-san... You had me worried.

Sai: That's because you were being rash. I understand that it was because you wanted to save the kitten, but... Shouldn't you think about yourself a bit more?

Sai-san smiled mischievously.

(Smiling like that.)

That smile made a lightly sweet feeling spread within my heart.

Sai: There you go, little guy.

Sai-san gave me the scared kitten.

Sai: Let's return to the castle.

MC: ...Okay!

Sai-san and I returned to the castle with the kitten.

Butler: Sai-sama...!

Once we've arrived, the butler shouted that in surprise after seeing Sai-san all wet. The butler quickly ran with a towel in hand.

Butler: What happened!

Sai: Don't worry about me.

Butler: ...

When Sai-san accepted the towel, he left from there. The kitten trotted as he followed him from behind...

Sai: Sorry, but you stay here. MC, sorry, but can you take him back to the cabin?

After saying that, Sai-san turned around.

Butler: Sai-sama is careless of himself.

The butler looked at Sai-san leave from behind. I felt a deep affection from that gaze.

Butler: Just as usual. He doesn't really take others into consideration and distances himself.

MC: Somehow, I know how you feel.

The butler gave me a bit of a troubled smile.

Butler: He's a really kind person, but... It makes me a little sad.

-Flashback-

MC: I wonder if this kitten wants to be kept by you.

---

Sai: I think there's someone that can take care of him better than me.

-Flashback-

(Sai-san...)

At the same time, I remembered Sai-san's smile.

-Flashback-

Sai: That's because you were being rash. I understand that it was because you wanted to save the kitten, but... Shouldn't you think about yourself a bit more?

-Flashback-

(Sai-san should be the one doing that...)

When I thought of that, I continued watching Sai-san leave from behind...

Chapter 5 - Fear of Fire

The next day... The breeze entered from the window felt nice.

(I wonder if I cooked it too much.)

For the kitten that I was looking after in the cabin, I was cooking some fish.

Sai: W-What are you doing, MC!?

When Sai-san came to check on me, he was trembling when he saw the frying pan.

MC: Sai-san! Right now, I'm cooking some fish for the kitten-

Sai: That's dangerous!

MC: Eh?

While I was looking away, the firepower had gotten a bit stronger.

MC: Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't notice.

As he watched me lower the firepower, his complexion didn't look well.

- Ask (☼)

(I wonder what's wrong.)

MC: You don't look so good... What's wrong?

Sai: ...

- Look at him worriedly (☽)

As Sai-san hung his head down, he looked hesitant to speak.

(I wonder what's wrong.)

///Choices///

When Sai-san's complexion quickly turned bad, I looked at him worriedly. Then, Sai-san slowly began to speak.

Sai: ...The truth is, I'm not good with fire.

(With fire...?)

MC: I see...

Sai-san rolled up his sleeve and on his arm was...

MC: ...!

There was a severe burn mark on it.

MC: This is...

Sai: I got it when I was little. Let the chef handle the fish. It would be troubling if you got hurt.

Sai-san told me that worriedly.

MC: Uh... It's already cooked, so it's okay. Won't you come too, Sai-san? I'm sure that would make him happy.

As I placed the cooked fish on a plate, I said that cheerfully to change the mood.

Sai: ...I'm fine.

With a pale face, he steadied his breathing.

MC: I see... Then, I'll be going.

Even though I did all I could do to invite him, I headed to the cabin alone.

......

By the time I arrived at the cabin, stars were beginning to shine in the sky.

(It has gotten late...)

When I arrived at the usual cabin with the fish in hand, the boys were playing with fireworks in front of it.

Boy 1: Miss! Let's use them together!

MC: Wait for a bit. Once I give the kitten some food... Ah... Look out!

Boy 1: Eh?

Despite my shout, it was too late. I looked at the pile of fireworks that the boys brought near the cabin. When the dried ones became ignited, the cabin got caught on fire instantly.

MC: ...!

The boys became surprised and stood still.

MC: Stay back!! Hurry and get some water...!

The boys ran after I said that.

MC: The kitten... isn't here.

When I looked around, he was nowhere in sight.

Boy 2: The kitten is inside...

One of the boys that stayed behind told me that shakingly.

(Inside the fire!?)

Without thinking, I ran into the cabin...

...

As a maid was polishing a castle window, she looked up.

Maid: Huh...? The sky is kind of red...

After hearing that, Sai ran over to the window.

Sai: ...At the cabin!?

MC went to the cabin with some fish.

Sai: ...!

Sai ran off...

While riding on a horse, he arrived at the burning cabin... The boys were using buckets of water on the cabin.

Sai: ...

The raging flames made the atmosphere distorted.

Sai: Where's MC...!?

As Sai was trying to keep his body from trembling, he asked that to the boys.

Boys: Your Highness... She went inside.

The boys looked like they were about to burst into tears.

Sai: ...!

......

MC: Where are you!?

The fire has already started spreading out towards the ceiling.

(I need to hurry and find him...!)

As I held back my fears, I forced myself to search for the kitten...
